I took a video for you all to hear the engine idling. Heat is on, and it's a cold start. The RPMs seem to fluctuate a bit. Not sure if it's a throttle sensor or just the engine warming up. It bounced from 1200 to 1500, down to 1000, and kept between those ranges. Anything of concern? And by the way, I know it's loud, it needs a new muffler.

Losing some engine speed is normal when shifting from park to drive, pretty much every car does this. I couldn't really hear the engine speed fluctuating, but thought I might hear either a bad pulley, large-ish vacuum leak, or squeaky belts. A vacuum leak would cause your fluctuation.

Thanks. Yeah, I figured the shift to drive causing RPMs to drop was normal. Vacuum leak... is that something I should be seriously worried about? That's not something I've dealt with in particular.

Immediate issues with vacuum leaks would be check engine lights sometimes misdiagnosed as oxygen sensors, poor fuel economy, lack of power, rough running. Long term issues would be excessive carbon build up, fouled plugs, failed catalysts, burnt valves.

Vacuum leaks aren't usually too hard to find and are usually very easy and cheap to fix. You can look around for torn or rotted vacuum hoses, or try spraying carb cleaner or starting fluid all over the engine when it's idling. If engine speed jumps briefly when spraying it in a certain area that's a strong indicator of a vacuum leak. But this test only works for some of the bigger leaks. If you still can't find the issue ask a shop to check for vacuum leaks with a smoke machine, shouldn't take more than an hour at most.

Check engine light did come on. I'll definitely look into that. Short term it doesn't sound like much more than an annoyance, but if that's the issue I'll get it fixed ASAP.

Rule it out at the very least.
